There’s long-term pain, also known as chronic pain, and short-term pain, known as acute pain. Most of the time, chronic pain can be caused by cancer pressing on an organ or by treatments that might have damaged some nerves.

Telling Your Doctor

A healthcare provider will ask you to rate your pain – normally on a scale of one to ten – which is known as the intensity of the pain. You need to learn how to identify what you’re feeling. If the pain is tolerable, you might rate it at a two or three. However, if the pain is affecting your daily tasks, you should rate it between eight and ten.
