Did you know that dry shampoo can, in some extreme cases, lead to hairloss? THis was the case for Nicole Baxter, a woman from Belfast. In a public Facebook post she explained that a bald patch developed on her head and kept getting bigger and bigger — and her scalp was increasingly itchy and uncomfortable as well. After several visits to doctors Baxter discovered that the problem wasn?t alopecia; it was dry shampoo.
Dry shampoo has become an increasingly popular product over the past several years. An oil-absorbing substance in the ?shampoo? allows it to absorb oils and grease — allowing hair to look better for longer, for those who don?t enjoy showering every day.
So Why is This Happening?
So far, doctors do not uniformly agree that there?s a link between hair loss and dry shampoo. Leonora Doclis is a hair loss expert and says that, though there?s been stories of dry shampoo causing hair loss, hair loss could, instead, be the result of people caring for their hair differently. People who use dry shampoo, she explains, tend to brush their hair less frequently so that when they do, it seems as if more hair is falling out at once.
Overall, consumers should be alert to changes that come with any new product — dry shampoo is safe and works well for most people, but out of millions of people who try it it?s possible a few have bad reactions. And this can be true of any product you use. One of the problems with identifying hair loss, unfortunately, is that the issue often isn?t noticeable until half the hair follicles are already lost.
What Can You Do When Hairloss Does Happen? And What is the Cost of a Hair Transplant?
Whether for genetic or environmental reasons, hair loss does happen. Luckily, there are numerous treatment options for this problem. Scalp micropigmentation, for example, is one successful technique where the head is essentially tattooed for overall coverage/no obvious bald areas. Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is another technique where very small sections of hair are transplanted from the back of the head. The cost of a hair transplant can vary widely depending on the clinic, the extent of hair loss, the surgical technique, etc.
Hair loss is a real problem, but luckily there are hair restoration techniques to deal with this issue. Research more here.
