On a world-wide basis, it’s been determined that 350 million individuals experience some type of depression. While some men experience this condition, women are 70% more likely to do so. While some individuals may not seek help due to the stigma attached to mental health issues, others may not due to the financial costs associated with treatment.

There are different types of psychotherapy services available. In addition to individual counseling, group therapy is another option. Many psychotherapists may recommend and offer a combination of both. This is particularly the case when they have clients that are focused on working through similar issues, such as marital affairs.

There are a variety of contributing factors which will determine how long treatment for will last. If someone is working with a psychotherapist for depression, sessions may last for ten to 20 weeks. If antidepressants are recommended or encouraged by a supervising physician or psychiatrist, it will usually take four to six weeks for this medication to be effective. During this time period, clients will usually receive regular medication monitoring check-ups along with their therapy sessions.

Since this can be as much as 20% to 40% less per session, it can be much more affordable for ongoing individual or couples counseling.

During your first individual counseling appointment with a therapist, they will ask you to fill out a client intake form. During this appointment, you will be able to discuss what you hope to accomplish during therapy and other important issues. Your therapist will also be able to provide you with a sense of what to expect from therapy sessions.
