Most of the time when a person thinks of back pain, they think of heavy lifting, but people who work in offices are also prone to it. Experts say that about 80% of the population will suffer from lower back pain at one point in their lives or another. Here are a few tips for preventing lower back pain in the office.
1. Get out of your chair.
One of the causes of lower back pain is not being active enough, so sitting in a chair all day long can have a huge effect on your back. Make sure to get out of your chair every few hours to stretch and walk around. Take the longest routes possible when you’re walking anywhere in your office. If you’re on the phone all day, wear a headset to take your calls and talk while standing — just make sure not to hunch over your desk.
2. Pay attention to your alignment.
Another thing you need to pay attention to in the office is your alignment. One of the biggest culprits of back pain and the side effects of lower back pain is misalignment in posture. Avoid sitting on your wallet if you keep it in one of your back pockets. Make sure that all of the casters on your chair are on even ground. If you use the phone all day, get a headset instead of pinning the phone between your shoulder and ear.
3. Make your space more ergonomic.
People affected by lower back pain at work also might see an improvement if they start equipping their workspace with ergonomic accessories. This starts with a good chair and can include a mouse, keyboard, and headset. It’s also important to look at the positioning of all of the things you use in your space and adjust them to suit your movements and comfort.
